    Pacing YOUR Race: Expert Insights

Whether you’re gearing up for a 5km or a marathon, proper pacing is essential for achieving your best performance. Your fitness level is only part of the equation; executing a smart race plan is equally crucial.

    The Importance of Pacing

For races longer than 800m, world records and peak performances are typically achieved with a negative split strategy. This means running the second half of the race faster than the first. Effective pacing isn’t just about finishing strong—it’s about managing your energy throughout the race.

    Start Smart

Here’s a practical guide to pacing from my years of experience and insights from Coach Nigel Pietsch:

If you think you are going too fast, you ARE going too fast! This is the most common mistake runners make. A fast start may feel exhilarating, but it often leads to burnout later in the race.

If you think you are going just right, you ARE going too fast. The initial excitement can cloud your judgment. Starting slightly slower than your ideal pace is usually more beneficial.

If you think you are going too slow, that is just right. This approach helps you conserve energy for a strong finish.

    Getting Your Pacing Right

Work with a Coach: Collaborating with a coach can provide personalised insights and pacing strategies tailored to your goals and fitness level. Coaches can help you determine the best pacing plan based on your training data and race goals.

Use a Time-Based Calculation: A useful method for estimating your marathon time is to take your half marathon (21.1km) time, double it, and then add around 20 minutes. This gives you a rough estimate of your marathon finishing time. From there, you can calculate your pacing strategy to avoid starting too fast.

    The Consequences of Poor Pacing

Getting your pacing wrong can impact your performance significantly:

5km Race: Misjudging your pace might cause 5-10 minutes of discomfort.

Marathon: A miscalculation can extend discomfort to 1-2 hours.

Proper pacing ensures you’re not just surviving the race but enjoying it. Correct pacing allows you to experience the thrill of overtaking other runners toward the end of the race, rather than being overtaken.

    Using Technology

For those who are tech-savvy, a GPS running watch can be invaluable. Set your watch to measure your average pace per lap to help you stay on track. There are many online pacing calculators, like McMillan and Daniels, that can assist with setting up your paces, but the key is to run based on your feel and breathing rate.

    Training and Adapting

Your pacing strategy should evolve with your training. As your fitness improves, the paces you once used may become outdated. It’s important to adjust and adapt based on your progress and current condition.

    In Summary

Pacing is a skill that can make or break your race. By learning to pace yourself effectively, you’ll enhance your race experience and improve your overall performance. Remember, a well-paced race is not just about finishing strong—it’s about enjoying every step of the journey.

Ready to put these tips into practice? Whether you’re running your first 5km or tackling a marathon, mastering your pacing strategy will help you achieve your best race performance.
